I''m almost done reading this omnibus. It''s been a total blast, and I wanted to give my opinion of it, without spoilers.

First off, the issues of Constantine that were drawn by Dillon truly stand out. It''s not that Dillon was necessarily a better artist than the others that participated in these issues. But Ennis and Dillon just seem to have developed some sort of a mind-meld. Dillon''s imagery gets to the heart of Ennis'' words in a more direct and poetic way than any of the other artists that participated in these issues.

Second, like a lot of great omnibus'' and collections, you should have fair warning that, at least for me, this started off a little slow. It had plenty of action, and interesting stories, but, (and again, this is very common), it felt like Ennis was just getting his footing with these characters and stories in the first issues. It''s not until about issue 64-65 (without giving away any spoilers) that Ennis'' storytelling really sets the hooks. And after that, Constantine was guns blazing, right through to the end.

Third, Constantine strikes me as a sort of a quintessential Gen X story, at least for a major label comic. There are tales of of the supernatural sprinkled throughout. But there are many occasions where an entire comic, or most of one, is dedicated to the back story of a relationship or a character. There are whole issues and long stories where magic doesn''t come up. There are also healthy doses of moral relativism and self-deprecation/self-loathing/self-doubt expressed by Constantine throughout. If those sort of digressions don''t interest you, this may not be the omnibus for you.

Fourth, many of the principle characters of this book are English and Irish, and the story takes place almost entirely in those locations. Ennis really took advantage of this title to air out some pretty heavy baggage regarding racism in England, Irish protestant and Irish Catholic tensions, (and British presence in Ireland). Although Ennis'' discussions of these subjects is 25+ years old, I found it fascinating, and it didn''t feel dated. I''ve read Preacher, and, if there''s one quibble I have with that great title, it is that Ennis occasionally missed the mark on giving language to some of those American characters. He definitely does not miss the mark in Constantine, which makes sense, as he''s Irish.

Finally, I wouldn''t normally do this, but Stuart Moore''s introduction also deserves a shout-out. He manages to say quite a lot about the omnibus and the personnel changes throughout the run, in a way that wouldn''t offend any of the principles.

I have about 30+ Omnibus collections, mostly from Marvel and the Ennis/Dillon Hellblazer Omnibus is by far the heaviest and has the largest page count. It''s pretty all-inclusive, containing (I believe) all the issues Garth Innis wrote for the Hellblazer title. I almost wish it had been split into two editions, it''s really too bulky to read on anything but a table or lectern. And because the book is so thick along with the way it''s bound, you really can''t lay it completely flat especially near the beginning or end of the book without possibly damaging the binding.

The comics collected here themselves, I''ve always been a big fan of Innis'' run on the title, still have the original comics from back in my comics collecting days. There''s a lot of great stories here and a few duds as well but overall, if perspective readers are fans of Innis (and Dillon''s) run on "Preacher" or Ennis'' "The Boys," you''ll find plenty to like here.

My only real complaint about this Omnibus is the revisionist recoloring job done for these comics. This seems to be a unwelcome trend at least with recent DC Omnibus collections (see the two Swamp Thing Omnibuses). There''s even a few pages that for no logical reason are left virtually uncolored at all.

This is a holding review .... Content which I''m sure most of us are familiar with is fantastic.... Some of the finest Hellblazer stories ever. Ennis at his best. And many a Pogues reference to be found. The pics show the binding while still wrapped... I''ll be taking a good look at this later and will post my thoughts... Initial look is again not Marvel quality binding from DC.... It''s a big big book so when next I update I will address how it holds together, opens, gutter loss etc. I am surprised it is here at all though given all that''s going on but u assume it was printed and ready to go... Fortunately I pre ordered when it was announced.

A massive omnibus that closes the chapter on the need for endless super-hero comics. There was something in the water during the DC transition to Vertigo. While I was aware of Garth Ennis''s brilliance on Preacher and Hit-man, the Hellblazer run seemed inaccessible due to the numbering scheme. This is the definitive run for one of the best characters ever created. How does an atheist write the best stories about creationism and damnation? How does a British author write the best mature American stories? Hellblazer omni is the crown jewel for any collection.
